The Uintah Chieftain
The Uintah Chieftain, first launched on May 14, 1908, in Myton, Utah, quickly became a key voice in the Uinta Basin. Published near the Uintah Valley Reservation, it chronicled both settler life and issues affecting the Ute Tribe, including land, water, and resource disputes shaped by federal Indian policy. While often reflecting settler perspectives, the paper also served as a record of the region’s intertwined histories, documenting schools, civic projects, agriculture, and community life. Its archives remain a valuable source for understanding more than a century of social, cultural, and political change in eastern Utah.
